Resume Template for Freshers

Updated June 2026 · 11 min read

No work experience doesn't mean an empty resume. Projects, internships, coursework, and skills can fill a one-page resume that gets interviews. Here's how.

The Best Resume Structure for Freshers

When you don't have professional experience, rearrange the standard resume format to lead with your strongest assets:

  1. Contact Information — name, email, phone, LinkedIn, portfolio/GitHub
  2. Objective Statement — 2 lines, specific to the role
  3. Education — move this UP (it's your strongest section)
  4. Projects — academic, personal, or hackathon projects
  5. Internships/Volunteer — even unpaid experience counts
  6. Skills — technical and relevant soft skills
  7. Certifications — online courses, bootcamps, professional certs

What Counts as Experience (When You Have None)

Counts as Experience

  • Academic projects with real deliverables
  • Personal projects (apps, websites, open source)
  • Hackathon participation + results
  • Internships (even 2-week ones)
  • Freelance or gig work
  • Volunteer roles with responsibilities
  • Part-time jobs (transferable skills)
  • Research assistant work

Does NOT Belong on a Resume

  • High school achievements (if you have a degree)
  • Hobbies (unless directly relevant)
  • "References available upon request"
  • Personal photo (in US/UK/AU)
  • Objective statements about "learning" (focus on contributing)
  • Every course you ever took

How to Write Project Bullets

Projects are your "experience" section. Write them like work experience:

❌ Made a to-do app using React

✅ Built a task management app with React + Node.js serving 50 daily users, featuring real-time collaboration via WebSockets and JWT authentication

❌ Did machine learning project for class

✅ Developed a sentiment analysis model (93% accuracy) using Python/scikit-learn on 50K Amazon reviews, deployed as REST API on AWS Lambda

Skills Section Strategy for Freshers

Your skills section compensates for limited experience. Be specific and honest:

Frequently Asked Questions

What should a fresher put on their resume?

Education (degree, GPA if 3.5+, relevant coursework), projects (academic or personal), internships, volunteer work, certifications, technical skills, and a strong objective/summary statement focused on what you bring.

How long should a fresher resume be?

One page. Always. With no professional experience, you should not need more than one page. Anything longer suggests padding.

Should freshers include GPA?

Include GPA if it is 3.5 or above. If below 3.5, omit it unless the job posting specifically requires it. You can include major GPA if it is significantly higher than cumulative.

Is an objective statement necessary for freshers?

A brief objective (2 lines max) helps freshers because it immediately tells the recruiter what role you are targeting. Example: "Computer Science graduate seeking entry-level software engineering roles. Strong in Python, data structures, and full-stack development."
